The updated AS/NZS 4777.2:2015 Grid connection of energy systems via inverters - Inverter requirements was published by Standards Australia on 9 October 2015.
AS/NZS 4777.2:2015 specifies requirements and tests for low-voltage inverters for the injection of electric power through an electrical installation into the grid at low voltage.
This new Standard replaces AS 4777:2005 parts 2 and 3, which only applied to inverters up to 30 kVA output power. The new Standard is applicable to all inverters that connect to the installation at low voltage (e.g. 230/400V AC), regardless of their rated output.
Another important change in scope is that AS/NZS 4777.2:215 applies to inverters that have power flow in either direction between the energy source and the grid. This may impact inverters that have a connection that is a 'grid interactive port' (see note below).
The Standard has a 12 month transition period that ends on 9 October. After 9 October 2016 all equipment must be fully compliant with the new Standard.
Some of the differences between this and the previous edition include:
- The inclusion of a balance requirement for multiple phase systems.
- Revised set-points and limits to match electricity distributor requirements.
- Inclusion of provisions for demand response and power quality response modes.
- Inclusion of requirements for electrical safety in accordance with IEC 62109-1 and IEC 62109-2.
- Inclusion of requirements for multiple mode inverter operation and requirements for systems with energy storage to meet electrical safety requirements in accordance with AS 62040.1.1.
| Note that almost all inverters and PCE on the CEC-approved list will need to lodge a new application to provide extra certificates. All products that have not been relisted with this information after 9 October 2016 will be removed. |
The CEC will only accept Certificates from a JAS-ANZ Accredited Certifier or a State Electrical Regulator. A list of approved certifiers can be found on our website.

Note re: 'grid interactive ports':
An inverter is deemed to have a 'grid interactive port' when it has an AC connection which either:
- supplies a load in parallel to the grid
- synchronises to the grid
- provides continuous output power in the event of loss of grid - e.g. no break before make.
If an inverter has any of the above features, it may need to comply with AS/NZS 4777.2:2015. Please refer to a JAS-ANZ certifier for confirmation if you are uncertain.
