Important: Two upcoming changes affecting solar batteries
New solar battery photo requirements start in 2 weeks
From 1 March 2026, installers need to provide photos of critical labelling for all solar battery installations. These photo requirements apply to all solar batteries installed from this date.
See our solar battery photo guide to prepare for this change. These photos must be provided when we request compliance paperwork. They don't need to be submitted with the small-scale technology certificate (STC) claim.
We'll use sophisticated Artificial Intelligence as part of our comprehensive assessment process to ensure that all claims meet the new photo requirements.
Failure to provide the required photos will result in delayed or rejected STC claim processing.
Make sure you're prepared for the new photo requirements on 1 March 2026.
Read more about these photo requirements on our website.
Changes to rebate for solar batteries from 1 May
From 1 May 2026, amendments to the Renewable Energy (Electricity) Regulations 2001 will start.
There will be adjustments to the number of STCs solar batteries are eligible for. This is to ensure the discount remains at around 30% for small, medium and large battery systems and aligns with falling battery costs over time.
The STC factor determines the number of STCs a system is entitled to create per kWh of useable capacity. It will be adjusted to:
- decline more frequently (every 6 months)
- decline at a higher rate.
The STC factor will also taper according to the amount of capacity installed:
- from 0 kWh up to 14 kWh (inclusive): STC factor applied at 100%.
- every kWh greater than 14 and up to 28 kWh (inclusive): STC factor applied at 60%.
- every kWh greater than 28 and up to 50 kWh (inclusive): STC factor applied at 15%.
Make sure you're familiar with these changes and the impact on STCs for solar batteries installed from 1 May 2026.
Use our solar battery STC calculator to estimate the number of STCs a solar battery may be eligible for, based on the current STC factor and future adjustments.
